Sale Patriotic Band Annual Report 1918

Gippsland Times 24 October 1918

In presenting their third annual report, the committee of the above band intimated that during the year the band put in an appearance at 126 performances and practices since last annual meeting.

The band has lost four members. Jack Griffiths had enlisted, Messrs. A. King and A. McDonald had removed from the district, and Will Carmody has accepted a position in a Melbourne Bank. Cr. and Mrs. Lyon had promised £1/1/ for the best attendance at practice; Mayor Butcher a gold medal for the boy showing the most progress; and Cr. Benussi for second and third. The donations had not created the interest anticipated as only three boys out of 10 who started have stuck to it, and made good progress.

The band generally has not made the progress that it should have (lone. This is not the fault of the bandmaster, but lack of interest by the individual members. There are at present several good players in Sale who are not in the band, and it would be a great help if they could be induced to join. As it is a Patriotic Band, the committee think everyone who can play should join and help.

The bandmaster, Mr. Herron, is always at his post, and anxious to see the band go ahead. The donations only amount to £2/3/, Cr. Benussi donating £1/1/ out of that amount. The band is fortunate in having Mr. Gordon Green behind them, for without him the credit balance would be very small. The band has a credit balance at the State Savings Bank of £21/12/4.

The committee take this opportunity of thanking all who have assisted by donations or otherwise. They feel sure that the public have appreciated the band, and the success associated with the past three years of the band will be continued. The committee trust for all practical sympathy during the present year.
