AIF Enlistments

Gippsland Times 23 May 1940

The largest draft of Second AIF recruits to have been formed in Area 37 left Sale by the afternoon train on Wednesday, 22nd May. Each member of the draft was a serving member of either the 13/19th Light Horse Regiment, or the 37th Battalion.

A large crowd gathered at the rail way station to wish the volunteers God speed. The entraining of the men was carried out amidst scenes of great enthusiasm, and to the accompaniment of lively tunes provided by the Sale Town Band.

Representative citizens made short speeches of farewell, and the ladies' committee of the Sale Branch of the War Service Comforts Fund demonstrated in a practical manner how they intend looking after the comfort of our serving men. The ladies provided afternoon tea for the whole draft and a pair of hand-knitted socks, and a supply of cigarettes for each member with the exception of the Traralgon men who were provided for in a like manner on the arrival of the train at Traralgon by their own committee. Band Re-Formed

Gippsland Times 15 May 1946

Disappointing Attendance At Meeting

The meeting called to consider the re-forming of the Sale Band which has been in recess during the war period and which obliged the public of Sale by coming cut after strenuous efforts and making such a fine showing at the welcome home recently, was most disappointing. Despite the lack or response by the public, those present decided to take their case to the Sale Town Council tonight.

The Mayor (Cr. C. F. Shellew) opening the meeting said that he was disappointed with the attendance. He appreciated the work which members had done during the welcome home and felt that the citizens also appreciated it. The band was a great asset to any town and Sale should have a band. The players had demonstrated their ability and he was sure that they would get support in the future. Although not speaking officially, he felt that sympathetic consideration would be given by the council to an annual vote for the band and that the matter of a decent bandroom and amenities would be considered.

The presence of a band at civic and town functions added greatly to the effort. Organisations needing the services of a band would be saved considerable expense if a local band was operating.

Mr. W. Darwin said that the band could considerably help the town. He pointed out the success which had attended band contests in various centres and the need for such interest in Sale.

At the conclusion of the discussion, Messrs. C. E. Uebergang J. Armtsrong, A. Heron, J. Fidler, M. Cooilson, Darwin and McLean were appointed as a deputation to wait on the council to ask that a sum of money be allotted to the band each year and that suitable amenities be provided for practice and the storing of band property.
