Bandmaster Visiting Kiribati

BANDMASTER of Sale City Band Hugh Davies · is currently visiting the Pacific Island country of Kiribati (formerly the Gilbert Islands) for its independence day celebrations.

In 1979 Mr Davies, who was then a member of the RAAF band, was sent to the Gilbert Islands to form a band for the police force.

While he was there he participated in the celebrations associated with the country gaining its independence from Great Britain.

PLENTY of awards and accolades went to Sale City Band members at its awards evening last Monday.

The night commenced with a recital by the newly formed stage band.

Sale City Band person of the year went to Matthew Monck for the work he does for the band both as a player and as an administrator. He also picked up the Doug Tulip award for best attendance.

Len Pendleberry, who joined the band in 1929, presented the award named in his honor for the most improved player to Carol Morris for showing a greatly developing skill in leading the horn section of the band.

Best learner of the year was won by Mal Sempf, who joined after initially taking his son along.

Terrina Davies was awarded the George Brown Best All Round Player for her willingness to pick up any instrument and fill a space in the band.

Martin Davies, Louise Mowat and Marita Davies were presented with pins celebrating five years as members of the senior band.

The band will be playing at Stratford, Heyfield and Sale Christmas carol evenings.
