Celebrations at the Sale City Band!

Gippsland Times 5 March 2021

The Sale City Band have so much to celebrate in 2021.

The bands most experienced and loved member Mr Raymond Jago received a great surprise last week after members of the Sale City Band arrived at his doorstep to play Happy Birthday. 90 years young, Mr Jago has spent most of his life committed to playing music and the development of the next generation of players.

Growing up in Melbourne, Mr Jago began his lifelong passion of music playing the cornet in the East Kew school band, and joining the East Kew Citizens' Band in the 1940s. Moving to his Giffard farm in 1950, Mr Jago immediately joined the Sale City Band. He spent the years of 1960-68 as Bandmaster of the Maffra Band, and subsequently returned to the Sale City Band as Bandmaster for a few years, as well as teaching brass to students at St Annes and Gippsland Grammar and Sale Technical School in the 1970s. His continued commitment to the band has enabled to the band to have another very exciting milestone to look forward to later in the year.

The Sale City Band will celebrate 150 years in 2021 making it one of the oldest Brass Bands in Victoria. Having remained strong through War, hard financial times and recent pandemic, the Sale City Band is excited to welcome past and present members and the community to retrace and remember the incredible history of the band. Keep your eye out for more information about how you can be involved in the celebration and pay tribute to all of those who have worn the bright red blazer and made music for the City of Sale.
